Married Christian McIntyre Denny (1855-1887), daughter of Peter Denny (1821-1895) and Helen Leslie (1827-1905). There were four daughters of this marriage. After Christian's death James Hamilton married Mary Maclellan, by whom he had a son and a daughter.

Peter Denny's brother Archibald Denny (1825-1866) was married to Helen Leslie's sister Janet Leslie (1829-1907). There were four daughters of this marriage.
John Denny (1841-1869), son of John Denny and Christian Cochran, was married to Helen and Janet's sister Isabella Jane Leslie (1843/4-1930). They had one daughter and two sons.
Helen, Janet and Isabella were three of the eleven children of James Leslie (1797-1865) and his wife Violet Nicol Lockhart (1804-1856).
