Founded as a joint company of various cardan shafts manufacturers. The Uni-Cardan AG originated in 1964 and consisted of shaft manufacturer Jean Walterscheid KG, Löhr & Bronkamp Offenbach and Gelenkwellenbau GmbH Essen.
They were later joined by Glaenzer Spicer (Poissy/France), GKN Birfield Transmissions and Walterscheid Schmiede- und Presswerk (Trier).
GKN achieved a majority interest in 1971 and, from then on, Uni-Cardan AG® acted as a product brand of the newly formed Walterscheid Powertrain Group.
