of Bridge Street Mills, Ardwick, Manchester; and Heaton Mersey, Stockport.
1885 'Serious Accident at Cotton Mill.— , A singular accident occurred at Messrs. Melland and Coward's Mill, Heaton Mersey, on Wednesday. Immediately after starting the large engine that drives the spinning department, the engineer left it to attend other machinery. During his absence the engine attained such a rate of speed that the huge fly-wheel burst, its segments being scattered about the engine-room in all directions. One fragment struck and severed the steam pipe that connected the engine with the boiler. The accident will cause stoppage for least two or three weeks. [1]
