Lieutenant-General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers (1827-1900)
1827 Born Augustus Henry Lane Fox in Yorkshire to a wealthy land-owning family.
1841 Entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst
1845 Commissioned into the Grenadier Guards.
1853 Married Alice Stanley; they had nine children.
He fought for a short time in the Crimean War, and served in Malta, England, Canada and Ireland.
1872 Colonel A. Lane Fox, FGS[1]
1880 Unexpectedly inherited the Rivers estate and the Pitt-Rivers name from his great uncle. The country estate was a substantial one and he also received an annual income of a little under £20,000: for the remainder of his life he led the life of a wealthy landowner.
1882 Retired from the Army with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-General although he remained on the active list until 1896.
1881-2 President of the Anthropological Institute.
1882 Appointed the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments
