WILLIAM CALDERWOOD had been joint managing director of Messrs. Palmer and Company, Ltd., of Stratford, Essex, since 1906.
He was born in 1868 and served a five years' apprenticeship, commencing in 1883, with Messrs. Masson, Scott, and Butrani, engineers, of Battersea.
He was then employed at the Lambeth works of Messrs. Dryden and Ford, and later joined the Royal Gun Factory, Woolwich.
In 1895 he became foreman over the fitting, turning and pattern shops of the Dawson Gas Engine Company, Clapham.
Two years later he was appointed works manager to Messrs. Palmer, and held this position until he became joint managing director.
He was associated with several inventions relating to litho-varnish, candle-making machinery, etc.
Mr. Calderwood was elected a Member of the Institution in 1900, and was a member of the Wire Ropes Research Committee.
His death occurred on 6th January 1935.
