He was educated at Cheltenham College and the [[Royal Military Academy, Woolwich]]. After two years' instruction at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, he was commissioned in the Royal Engineers and posted to a field company and training battalion. Later he took an electrical and mechanical course in civilian works before going to India in 1934, where he was subsequently appointed garrison engineer at Quetta with responsibility to the C.R.E. for the design and construction of military earthquake-proof buildings.
