FRANCIS BERNARD PITCAIRN was born at Harrow on 21st June 1875.
He was educated at Harrow, and subsequently spent three years as a student at the City and Guilds of London Central Institute, followed by two years as a pupil with Messrs. James Simpson and Co., Ltd., Pimlico.
Further experience was gained with Messrs. J. Taylor, Sons, and Santo Crimp, engineers, Westminster, more particularly on waterworks and sewage construction work, until June 1899, when Mr. Pitcairn was appointed Assistant Engineer to the Shanghai Water Works Company. This appointment he held until 1921, when he was promoted to Engineer-in-Chief and Manager. He was elected an Associate Member of this Institution in 1906, and was transferred to full Membership in 1919.
