The reciprocating " V "-shaped blades, arranged in succession along a carrying bar, which with the fixed fingers form the cutting mechanism of the reaper and binder, as also of the grass cutter or mower, was the invention of Cyrus H. McCormick, who brought into use his first machine on his father's farm in Virginia in 1831, when he was but twenty-two years of age. He eventually patented the machine in 1834.[1]
McCormick also patented a cast and wrought iron plough which was very popular with local farmers.
McCormick purchased land on the north bank of the Chicago River in order to build a factory.
1851 The McCormick reaper won many awards from 1851 onwards including the Grand Council Medal at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in London.
