ALBERT HOSSENER died suddenly on November 27, 1902.
He was born on February 8, 1837, at Wongrowitz in the province of Posen, and studied mining at Berlin with a view to entering the Prussian mining service.
In 1866 he proceeded to the Rhenish Westphalian district, where he remained as works manager or as works owner until his death. After having spent some time as colliery manager, he founded in 1870 a coke works at Alt-Essen, which he sold in 1879. He was much impressed with the importance of recovering the by-products in coking, and with his help, on May 27, 1881, the first great undertaking in Germany for coke-making with the recovery of by-products was founded. He was also the first to endeavour to recover benzol from the gases produced on the distillation of coal.
