1906 Advertising as a coal and cannel merchant, 385, City Road, Manchester. Best house coal, 11d per cwt. Trencherborne coal 10d. Best kitchen coal 9d. Seconds 8d. Best nuts 9d. Slack 6d. The advert listed 42 retail yards in various parts of Manchester.[1]
This 1896 photo[2] shows the retail yard in Tatton Street, Hulme, with a group of small iron-wheeled handcarts which allowed householders to take coal to their homes.
