The Winding House Museum in New Tredegar, South Wales, is the new Caerphilly County Borough Museum. It incorporates the impressive Thornewill and Warham winding engine and its engine house, on the site of the former Elliott Colliery.
The winding engine was described in Engineering 1892/09/30 and Engineering 1892/10/14. Cylinders 42 in. diameter by 6 ft. stroke. The drum is 24 ft. in diameter. The total carried by the drum consisted of 9 tons 4 cwt. of rope, two cages and their chains weighing 5 tons 4 cwt. together, tubs weighing 19 cwt., and coal weighing 2 tons 10 cwt. per lift. The engine was constructed to the general specification of Mr. E. M. Hann, general manager of the Powell Duffryn Colliery Co.
