1883 'WHITELANDS TWIST COMPANY, CHRISTENING THE NEW ENGINES, The engines of the new mill, built by the Whitelands Twist Co., Limited, were formally named and started on Thursday afternoon. The engines are on the horizontal tandem principle with Corliss valves, the high pressure cylinders having a diameter of 24in., and the low pressure of 46in., with a 6ft. stroke. working at 50 revolutions per minute. The fly rope drum, which weighs about 83 tons, has a diameter of 30ft., and is 7ft. 5in. wide, carrying 35 1 3/4in ropes, thirteen of which drive the carding and preparation machinery and running into the shafts of the spinning rooms. The drum has two sets of arms, and is cased with wood to prevent the draught occasioned by drums on this principle when uncased. The engines have been built by Messrs. [[John Musgrave and Sons]], of Bolton, and there is attached to the drum one of the patent automatic turning engines, invented by that firm, to turn the engines for repairs or for the replacing of ropes, &c.. obviating the use of bars for such purposes. The mill will contain, when all the machinery is in, 74,000 spindles, with the necessary preparation. At present there have been laid down 22 carding engines out of 69, and 18 pairs of mules, of which four are working, out of 34 pairs. The mill has been built by Messrs. [[Storrs and Sons]], of Stalybridge, and the boilers. which are to work up to 90lbs. pressure to the square inch, by Messrs. [[Tetlow Brothers]], of Hollinwood. Messrs.
