Son of a foundry owner. In 1871 he began working in the machine factory of Decker & Co. in Cannstadt, where he spent two years. In 1873 he became a production engineer with Jacob Rieter in Föß in Winterthur, where until 1877 he was involved with water turbines. He then worked as a constructor in Baienthaler Maschinenfabrik company in Baienthal in Cologne on the Rhine. In 1877 he developed an improved type of steam admission valve gear for steam engines. He continued to  improve his system, with patents in 1891, 1892, 1893 and 1895).
