Originally known as Estação Central, now Estação de Caminhos de Ferro do Rossio (Rossio Railway Station).
Designed between 1886 and 1887 by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro.[1]
Four Babcock and Wilcox boilers supplied steam to the hydraulic pumping engines and electric light machinery when required. The pumps were made by H. J. Coles of Southwark, who also supplied the hydraulic pipes, luggage lifts, and capstans. The hydraulic traverser was made by Cowans, Sheldon and Co.[2]
