1892 Birmingham Corporation began to acquire land in Wales, in the Upper Elan Valley and the Claerwen Valley, eventually amounting to over 45,000 acres. The construction of three reservoirs on the Elan and three on the Claerwen was envisaged, with an aqueduct to Birmingham, and a receiving reservoir and ancillary works.
The three Elan reservoirs were completed in 1904 with a combined capacity of 11,175 million gallons.
1946 The construction of the Claerwen Dam, instead of the three dams originally proposed, was commenced in 1946 and completed in 1952.
