This bridge spans the River Clyde, linking West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire, carrying the A898 road. It is a three-span cable-stayed bridge.

The bridge was built as a "box girder" design combined with a "cable stay".

The designer was William Christopher Brown (1928-2005) of Freeman Fox and Partners. The contractors were Christiani and Nielsen, Fairfield-Mabey, Lehane, Mackenzie and Shand Ltd. The stay cable steel supplier was Bridon International.

1970 At this time the West Gate Bridge in Australia collapsed - it had been constructed in a similar fashion by the same structural engineers. The collapse was partially attributed to the structural design due to a difference in camber between 2 half girders on the west end of the span. As a result new standards were established but, by then, the Erskine Bridge had already been opened. In order to meet the new standards, the Erskine Bridge was further stiffened.

1971 The bridge was opened by Princess Anne.
