Charles Wallace Chapman was born in Lancaster in 1897 and educated at the Royal Lancaster Grammar School.
Apprenticed to the Vickers engineering company at Barrow-in-Furness.
WWI Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and employed on anti-submarine projects.
After the war he studied at the University of Liverpool and was awarded an M.Sc. in engineering.
