Born at Handsworth, Birmingham the son of Francis William Payton and his wife Bertha Hopley and had children Ernest Stanley Payton, b. 1902, Kings Norton, Birmingham, and Beatrice Irene Payton, b. 1904, Kings Norton, Birmingham. He married secondly Elizabeth Gertrude Loach and had son John Austin Payton.
