[[Pierre Lallement]] (born between August 30, 1843 and August 29, 1844; died August 29, 1891), is considered by some to be the inventor of the bicycle.
As a 19-year-old maker of baby carriages in Nancy, France in 1862, Lallement saw someone ride by on a dandy horse. Rather than build one of his own, he added a transmission comprising a rotary crank mechanism and pedals attached to the front-wheel hub, thus creating, allegedly, the first true bicycle.
He moved to Paris in 1863, apparently interacted with the Olivier brothers, who saw great commercial potential in his invention. The Oliviers formed a partnership with Pierre Michaux to mass-produce a 2-wheeled velocipede. Some claim they produce after Lallement's design in 1864, some claim after Ernest Michaux design. Lallement himself apparently become an employee of Michaux for a short time.
Lallement left France in July 1865 for America, settling in Ansonia, Connecticut, where he built and demonstrated an improved version of his bicycle. He filed the earliest and only patent for the pedal-bicycle in April 1866, the patent being awarded on November 20, 1866. His patent drawing shows a machine bearing a great resemblance to the style of dandy-horse built by [[Denis Johnson]] of London, with its serpentine frame, the only differences being the addition of the pedals and cranks, and a thin strip of iron above the frame acting as a spring upon which he mounted the saddle, to provide a more comfortable ride.
Failing to interest an American manufacturer in producing his machine, Lallement returned to Paris in 1868, just as the Michaux bicycles were creating the first bicycle craze in France, an enthusiasm which spread to the rest of Europe and to America. Lallement returned to America again sometime before 1880, which was the date of a patent infringement suit where he testified on behalf of plaintiff Albert Pope, who had bought his patent. Lallement was living in Brooklyn and working as Pope's employee. He died in obscurity in 1891 in Boston at age 47.

Pierre Michaux (June 25, 1813 - Paris - 1883) was a blacksmith who furnished parts for the carriage trade in Paris, and made perambulators, during the 1850s and 1860s.

He started building bicycles with pedals in the early 1860s. He, and/or his son Ernest Michaux, may have been the inventor of this machine, by adapting cranks and pedals on the front wheel of a draisienne (or hobby-horse).

In 1863 the first machine with pedals (acting directly on the front wheels) was produced in his workshop[1].

In 1868 he formed a partnership with the Olivier brothers under his own name, Michaux et Cie ("Michaux and company"), which was the first company to construct bicycles with pedals on a large scale, a machine which was called a velocipede at the time, or "Michauline" .

The design was based on the previous model, the only difference being that on the bicycles of the new company the serpentine frame was made of two pieces of cast iron bolted together, instead of wood, which made it more elegant and enabled mass-production.

In 1865 a blacksmith from Lyon named Gabert designed a variation on the frame which was of a single diagonal piece of wrought iron and was much stronger - by that time Pierre Lallement had emigrated to America, where he filed the only patent for the pedal bicycle.

It soon became evident that the serpentine cast-iron frames were not sturdy enough, and with competing manufacturers already producing bicycles with the diagonal frame, the Oliviers insisted that Michaux follow suit.

The partnership was dissolved in 1869, and Michaux and his company faded into oblivion as the first bicycle craze came to an end in France and the USA. Only in England did the bicycle remain popular, and England was the site of all of the next major improvements to the machine.
