A 10.75 mile branch line from Bishop Auckland and Weardale Railway to Frosterley with another branch to Bishopley Crag from Broad Wood. It was opened in 1847.
In 1847 it purchased the Bishop Auckland and Weardale Railway, the Shildon Tunnel, The Wear and Derwent Railway and the Weardale Extension Railway
In 1862 the Frosterley and Stanhope Railway extended it to Stanhope.
