John Guest (1722-1787) was a brewer, farmer and coal merchant
1722 Born in Broseley, Shropshire.
Married Ann Willmore
1760s Moved from Shropshire to south Wales, where he helped to start a furnace at Merthyr Tudful - he collaborated with Isaac Wilkinson in starting the Plymouth Ironworks.
1763 John Guest came to the attention of Thomas Lewis and the other Dowlais partners.
1767 He was appointed manager of the Dowlais Ironworks on 30 April 1767. He built his first house at Morlais Brook, Gellifaelog but, isolated from his family, became a "lonely and melancholy man". He discovered coal on Lewis's property and used it to replace charcoal for smelting.
By 1767, Guest had moved most of his family to Dowlais. His children were:

- Sarah Guest who married William Taitt another of the Dowlais partners.
- John Guest (1750-1824), who married his second (?) cousin Penelope (1738/9-1795) on 13/10/1774 at Broseley (he was her 2nd husband). They had 3 daughters, the youngest of whom became the wife of John Onions, iron founder at Broseley [1].
