John Blake invented the Blake's Hydram in the mid 1800's. Another example of fine Victorian engineering, the Hydram is capable of pumping water using only the power of a flowing body of water. They are still produced today by Allspeeds which is testimony to its efficiency and simplicity. Their current website has all the details.
