1804 Appointed foreman for masonry and lockworks at the eastern end of the Caledonian Canal under John Simpson
Simpson and Cargill continued to work together as contractors
1815 After Simpson's death, Cargill continued as contractor on the Caledonian Canal
Contractor for Telford's Over Bridge, Gloucester
Resident engineer on the Morpeth Bridge, completed in 1831
