William McCrea (1864-1907)
1907 Obituary [1]
WILLIAM McCRAE was born at Airdrie on 16th May 1864.
He was educated at the High School of Dundee, and attended evening classes at University College, Dundee, from 1880 to 1884.
He received his engineering training under his father, Mr. Boyd McCrae, who was manager of the Dundee Gas Works, and latterly under his elder brother, Mr. John McCrae, who succeeded their father, on his death, in the management at Dundee.
He was subsequently appointed assistant manager, and on his brother's death in 1896 he was appointed as his successor. During that period he prepared all the necessary plans for the various extensions of apparatus and plant, and superintended the execution of the work.
In 1903 he was appointed engineer and manager of the Falkirk Corporation Gas Works. Since then he has designed and superintended the erection of entirely new works at Thornhill, which were opened in May 1906.
His health broke down before the opening of these works, and after several months' leave of absence he returned to his duties, but his health again gave way, and he ultimately resigned his position in December 1906.
His death took place at Falkirk on 22nd January 1907, in his forty-third year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1904; and he was also a Member of the Institution of Gas Engineers.
