THOMAS WILLIAM PLUM was born in London on 20th January 1814, and was engaged in business there until 1857, when he was appointed general manager of the Blaenavon Iron Works, Monmouthshire.
Under his management many important improvements were carried out at the works, notably the erection of the new forge and mills, the tyre mill, &c.
He was subsequently connected with ironworks in Yorkshire and Staffordshire, and was for many years previous to his death resident manager of the Old Park Iron Works, near Shifnal, where he died on 30th November, 1878, in the sixty-fifth year of his age.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1861; and in 1863, in the discussion upon a paper on the construction of iron ships, he gave a description of the mode he. had then adopted at Blaenavon of rolling large girder sections.
He had recently invented an improved form of blast-furnace tuyere.
