1857 Advertisement: 'Engineers, Machinists, Millwrights, Machine Brokers, and others- MR P. GRANT has received instructions from Messrs Smith and Grumbridge (in consequence of a dissolution of partnership) to SELL BY AUCTION, without reserve, on the premises, Nos. 66 and 68, Major-street, Manchester, on Friday next, the 24th April 1857, the Whole of the WORKING PLANT, now in excellent condition, which includes a very superior planing machine, by Collier, capable of planing 12ft. by 3ft. 2in. with gearing &c complete; first-rate slide and screw cutting lathe, 16ft. bed, 12½ in. headstock, with change wheels, face plates, eight screw chuck compound slide rest, &c. ; 9in. geared lathe, with face plates and top motion ; several superior single speed lathes, also complete with face plates and top motion ; 5in. ditto with hollow spindle ; excellent portable smith's forge, anvil, very superior grindstone, 4ft. diameter, with cast iron trough, frame, and pulley; the whole of the driving shafting, including hangers, pulley strapping, sc.; several vices, nearly new, and benches; mandrel block and mandrels, by Holmes; 6in. slide rests, a quantity of turning and other tools, sets of taps and dies, steam gauge, hydraulic lifting jack, boring apparatus and bars; number of malleable iron gaspipe elbows, variety of patterns; gas stove and office fixtures; also considerable number of gas regulators and patent sewing machines; large machine for making letter-press printers' brass rule, &c—On view the day prior and morning of sale, when catalogues may be obtained.—Any other information from the Auctioneer, Riding's Court, Manchester.—The PREMISES TO BE LET, with 8-horse power Steam Engine.'
