JOHN JAMES BARRETT was born on 17th September 1846 at Gharra in Scinde, India.
From 1863 to 1867 he held the position of junior engineer on several steamers in the mercantile marine, including the [[British India Steam Navigation Co]].
During the Abyssinian expedition in 1867 he was appointed chief engineer, which position he held on various steamers.
In 1872 he because chief engineer in the Turkish navy.
In 1875 he was engaged as engineer for the Bombay Spinning and Weaving Mill, of which he was shortly afterwards appointed manager and superintendent engineer.
In 1885 he started bossiness as consulting and inspecting engineer in Bombay, where his death took place after a long and painful illness in August 1897, in his fifty-first year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1882.

JOHN JAMES BARRETT was born on 17th September 1846 at Gharra in Scinde, India.

From 1863 to 1867 he held the position of junior engineer on several steamers in the mercantile marine, including the British India Steam Navigation Co.

During the Abyssinian expedition in 1867 he was appointed chief engineer, which position he held on various steamers.

In 1872 he because chief engineer in the Turkish navy.

In 1875 he was engaged as engineer for the Bombay Spinning and Weaving Mill, of which he was shortly afterwards appointed manager and superintendent engineer.
