James Macdonald (1866-1921)

JAMES MACDONALD was born at Millport, Buteshire, in 1866, and was educated at Cumbrae and at the High School, Glasgow.
From 1882-7 he served an apprenticeship with A. and J. Inglis, marine engineers, Glasgow, and during that period attended classes at Anderson's College.
On the completion of his apprenticeship he went to sea, becoming chief engineer four years later, and in 1892 he was appointed an assistant in the Government Marine Surveyor's Office, Hong-Kong, and ten years later was promoted to Principal.
This position he held until his death, which took place at Melbourne in January 1921, at the age of fifty-four.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1910.
