Percy Blades Porritt (1875-1925)

PERCY BLADES PORRITT was born at Wakefield, Yorkshire, on 26th October 1875, and was educated at the Collegiate School, Bridgwater.
He served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Ashton, Frost and Co., Ltd., Blackburn, proceeding from there in 1898 to the Burnley Iron Works Co., Ltd., where he remained for three years as draughtsman.
From thence he joined Messrs. Benjamin Goodfellow, Ltd., Hyde, Manchester, where he was in full charge of the drawing office.
He then gained further experience with Messrs. Willans and Robinson, Rugby, and subsequently went to India to take up a position with Messrs. Burn and Co., Limited, Howrah, Bengal, as chief mechanical draughtsman, which post he occupied from January 1905 until April 1910, when he joined the Vulcan Iron Works, Ltd., Calcutta, as works manager, and subsequently as general manager.
With this firm he remained until his death, carrying out and superintending during his tenure various important engineering works in a manner which gained for him high reputation in Indian engineering circles.
Mr. Porritt died in India on the 28th July 1925.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1910, and a Member in 1917.
