ALFRED ERNEST GORDON was born at Montrose on 7th May 1874, and was educated in Glasgow, where his apprenticeship of five years was served in the Clutha Works of Messrs. P. and W. Maclellan, Ltd. During that period he also attended a three-years' course at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.
On the completion of his apprenticeship he went for two years as draughtsman at the Clydesdale Works of Messrs. A. and J. Main, Ltd., and he was next engaged as assistant engineer at the brewery of Messrs. A. Guinness and Sons, Ltd., Dublin.
Three years later he took up an appointment with the Underground Electric Railways of London, being engaged on erecting work.
Having held this position for five years, he joined the London staff of the Rio Tinto Co., Ltd., as designer of plant, etc.
Subsequently he acted as engineer with the Swansea Vale Spelter Co., Ltd., for three years and as superintending engineer of Messrs. Dunlop and Rankin, Ltd., Leeds, during 1920-21.
He was next engaged in the erection of a sintering plant for the English Crown Spelter Co., Swansea, and of extensions to plant for the United Automobile Services, Lowestoft.
His death took place suddenly at Great Yarmouth after a long illness, on 8th February 1925.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1921.
