JOHN ROBERT HANNAN served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Dorman, Long and Company and from 1896 to 1898 was assistant to the chief engineer of the company.
He was then appointed engineer and works manager for Messrs. E. Bennis and Company of Bolton for whom be built new works.
He remained at Bolton till 1911 when he took up the position of engineer and technical director to Messrs. Superheater Units of Swansea, for whom also he designed new works. During his seventeen years' connexion with this firm he contributed many improvements to superheater design, and he acted as consulting engineer to many other firms.
In 1929 he entered into partnership with Mr. H. G. Turner to practise as a consulting engineer in Westminster and he acted in this capacity on behalf of a number of artificial silk manufacturers.
Mr. Hannan, who was born at Middlesbrough in 1875, became a Member of the Institution in 1929.
His death occurred on 3rd June 1930.
