"...The Major, who attained his seventieth year last Saturday, was in many respects a remarkable man, reminding one of several of the great contractors who gathered fame and fortune during the early days of railway development. Born near Dewsbury, his father being a woollen manufacturer, on his mother's side he was related to Messrs. Pearson, contractor. An uncle of his was one of the contractors for the famous bridge which stretches across the Menai Straits. As a youth he began work with Messrs. Hemingway and Pearson, who were at that time constructing the Oldham and Ashton branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Subsequently he entered the service of Messrs.
