At the age of twenty-five [[John Edward Stead]] entered into partnership with his first employer, [[J. Pattinson|John Pattinson]] to establish the laboratory.
 
1905 when Pattinson retired, [[H. Frankland|Mr. H. Frankland]], F.I.C., joined Mr. Stead, the name of the firm, [[Pattinson and Stead]], being retained.
