1874 'Latest local patents …..W. H. Willans, 9, Leavygreave, Sheffield—manufacture of tubular or annular castings. In this invention the castings are made in moulds with tubular cores, allowing of cooling applications to their interior. The inventor inserts an iron plug or other material, admitting of the expansion of the core, but preventing its collapse. In some cases he dispenses with the inserted substance if the tubular core be capable of withstanding the pressure of the molten metal in the mould, but is yet of a nature to yield to its contraction in the cooling.'[1]
