Charles Vaughan Wilkieson (1825-1878)

MAJOR-GENERAL CHARLES VAUGHAN WILKIESON, R.E., was born in April 1825, at Woodbury in Bedfordshire.
He obtained his first commission in the Madras Engineers on 9th December 1842, and was chiefly employed in civil duties in India in the Public Works Department; but he saw some military service in Burnish in the years 1853-54.
He became Lieut.-Colonel in 1863, Colonel in 1871, and Major-General in 1877. The highest civil appointment to which he rose in India was that of acting chief engineer of Mysore.
During his residence in that country he was connected with the construction of the road bridges over the Cauvery and Bhowany rivers in the Coimbatore district, and those over the Toonga and Buddra rivers in Mysore.
In 1861 and 1862 he was employed under the Commanding Royal Engineer at Manchester in the construction of barracks and forts.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1868, at which date he occupied the post of Master of the Mint at Madras.
He subsequently returned to England, and died at Inverness on 23rd August 1878, at the age of fifty-three.
