Clement Edwin Stretton (1850-1915) Writer on railways.
1850 Born the son of Clement Stretton, Solicitor, and his wife Julia Stanbury Osborn
Lived in Leicester. His family were clearly affluent because in 1866 he was articled to a Civil Engineering firm for £300, no small sum in those days
1866 As part of his training, he was sent for a month to a quarry at Cromford, Derbyshire, in order to learn something of the masons’ trade.
1878-9 Lord Mayor of Leicester at the tender age of 28.
1881 Living at 40 Saxe Coburg Street, Leicester: Clement E. Stretton (age 30 born Leicester), No Profession. With his wife Alice H. Stretton (age 27 born Leicester) and their daughter Alice Stretton (age 10 months born Leicester). Two servants.[1]
1891 Living at Saxe Coburg Street, Leicester: Clement E. Stretton (age 40 born Leicester), Engineer Civil, Secretary to Publisher and a Widower. One servant.[2]
1893 Represented England in the Railway Department of the 1893 Chicago International Exhibition.[3]
He published hundreds (perhaps thousands) of articles and letters and several books about railways and locomotives, but some of his work is considered misleading
1911 Living at 2 Mecklenburg St., Leicester: Clement Edwin Stretton (age 60 born Leicester), Civil Engineer (Retired) and a Widower. One servants.[4]
1915 February 15th. Died. Probate to Clement Stretton.
