1840 Railway engine driver for the locomotive Globe on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and later for the William IV

1934 November. He had a narrow escape when a colleague James Cleasby took the engine out and hit a block of wood deliberately placed on the line with the intention of derailing the engine and killing him. Cleasby died and the perpetrator was never caught.
