1849 Shown on the O.S. map as Phoenix Mills (Cotton), on the northwest side of the [[Ashton Canal]], directly opposite [[Hope Mill]]. The other side of the mill was on Piercy Street, while the south western end was on Carruthers Street, and the north eastern end was bounded by a timber yard. The site measured approx 320 ft by 120 ft, and was almost entirely occupied by buildings, whose size and shape suggests that buildings had been added progressively.
