JAMES OSWALD spent the early years of his career in Egypt with his father (Mr. John Oswald), who was chief engineer of the Ramle Waterworks. Owing to the bombardment of Alexandria, his family were compelled to return to England, and Mr. Oswald commenced to study under Professor Spooner at the Polytechnic, Regent Street.

He later became apprenticed to Messrs. James Simpson and Company and subsequently joined the general engineering business which had been founded by his father at Battersea.

Upon the firm being formed into a limited liability company in 1913, he was appointed managing director, and retained this position until his death on 1st March 1932, at the age of 64.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1907 and was transferred to Membership in 1911.
