Herbert Clively Ellis was born in 1886 and was educated at Skinner's School, Tunbridge Wells, and Brighton Technical Institute.
After serving a motor engineering apprenticeship with G. Stevenson (Kent and Sussex Garage), he took over a partnership in the firm. During the war he was in charge of M.T. Mobile Workshops in France, and was mentioned in dispatches.
On demobilisation he was appointed Assistant Engineer in the Motor Department of the Anglo-American Oil Co. He was killed in a motor accident in July, 1928.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1921.
