David Arthur Hughes (1896-1926)

David Arthur Hughes was born in 1896, and was educated at the Birkenhead Institute. At the outbreak of war he enlisted in the A.S.C. as motor driver, and was rapidly promoted to sergeant, and was subsequently given a commission in the Cheshire Regiment.
After serving as an infantry officer for a year, he was gazetted to the Air Force, and was in training when the armistice was signed.
He then proceeded to Liverpool University for a four years' course, obtaining his B. Eng. and M. Eng. degrees. At the termination of his course he obtained a post as flying instructor with Armstrong Siddeley Motors, and proved himself a capable pilot. He met his death on 19th July, 1926, as the result of a crash whilst flying.
He was elected a Graduate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1921.
