Lieut.- Colonel HERBERT JOHN TRUMP, R.A.O.C., whose death occurred on 15th May 1933, had had a distinguished military career. He was a brilliant technical officer whose engineering skill contributed considerably to the advancement of mechanization in the Army.
He was born at Rhymney, Mon., in 1879 and served his apprenticeship from 1896 to 1898 at the Rhymney Ironworks and until 1903 with the Cardiff Railway Company.
He then became draughtsman, first with Messrs. Bell Brothers of Middlesbrough, and from 1907 to 1910 with Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan and Company. Later he returned to Messrs. Bell Brothers as departmental manager and engineer.
In 1915 he received a commission in the R.A.O.C. (Inspector of Ordnance Machinery) and was appointed in 1916 with rank of Captain to the command of an Ordnance Mobile Workshop with which he later proceeded to France, where he remained until 1919. He was then posted, with the rank of Acting Major, to the Military Allied Commission of Control and was responsible for the inspection of German munition factories and the destruction of German war material and plant.
On his return to England in 1922 he directed his attention to military engineering problems. He was subsequently appointed to the Inspection Department at Woolwich and posted to the Mechanical Warfare Experimental Establishment at Farnborough. Here his specialized knowledge had full scope and led to his appointment in 1931 as a member of the Mechanical Warfare Board.
Colonel Trump was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922.
