DONALD BALMAIN was born in 1897 and received his education in mechanical engineering at the City and Guilds Technical College, Finsbury.
After serving his apprenticeship from 1915 to 1918 with Messrs. Handley Page, Ltd., aeronautical engineers, London, he was for a brief period a cadet in the Royal Air Force.
In 1919 he was appointed engineer to the Teams Glass Works of Messrs. George Davidson and Company, Ltd., glass manufacturers, of Gateshead. In 1933 he accepted the position of chief engineer at the Teams Glass Works of Messrs. George Davidson and Company, Ltd., in the same town, with responsibility for the design, installation, and maintenance of plant, and the entire production of the works. He was also Technical Director of this works from 1937 to 1941.
