White and Thompson was founded in 1912 to build aircraft. They later moved to their own facility at Middleton-on-Sea near Bognor in Sussex.
The company was founded by Norman A. Thompson and Dr. Douglas White.
The first aircraft were designed by Frederick Lanchester and built by Daimler. From 1909 to 1911, Lanchester was a consultant to the company; he gave their biplane many innovative features such as aluminium-clad wings and triangular bracing with tubular steel struts. An experimental aircraft co-designed by Lanchester did not survive its trial flight in 1911, and he abandoned the practical side of aviation.
