James Duncan Carmichael was educated at elementary, secondary and high schools in South Shields, and served his apprenticeship with Carmichael Bros Ltd, Iron Founders and Engineers. He became Foundry foreman in 1913.
He saw war-service in France from 1915-19, serving with the Royal Engineers Workshop Unit and then with the staff of the Chief Engineer, First Army, when he attained the rank of Captain. He was awarded the O.B.E. and was mentioned in despatches.
In 1919 he returned to Carmichael Bros Ltd, as Works manager, becoming Director and General Manager in 1930, and Managing Director and Deputy Chairman in 1939.
