Charles Hastings Dent, who at the time of his death in October 1956 had been a Member of the Institution for 68 years, was during the greater part of his working life connected with the railways.
He served his apprenticeship with the London and North Western Railway Company at Crewe from 1881 to 1885.
Among his subsequent posts he served as Superintendent of the Northern Division of the London and North Western Railway, and General Manager of the Great Southern and Western Railway. From 1913 to 1922 he was General Manager of the Great Northern Railway.
During the 1914-18 war he served as a member of the Railway Executive Committee and was Chairman of the Railway War Manufacturers Committee.
Mr. Dent, who was born on 21st July 1864, was elected a Member of this Institution in 1888.
