Sliabh (Slieve) Aughty Furnaces, County Clare, Ireland.
These are the important remains of a group of early blast furnaces on the western shores of Lough Derg. The industry was established in the early 17th century, taking advantage of the availability of iron ore and wood (for charcoal). At least eight furnaces were active in the area between Tuamgraney, Feakle and Woodford.
Four furnaces have survived in various stages of decay - Derryoober, Bealkelly, Whitegate and Ballyvannan.
A project is underway to investigate, stabilise, and preserve these furnaces, and to research and spread knowledge about the history of the local iron industry.
