Rear-Admiral THOMAS HAROLD SIMPSON, M.V.O., ret., who was born in 1896, was educated at the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne and Dartmouth, and entered the Royal Naval Engineering College, Devonport, in 1919, afterwards taking a course of instruction at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
He went to sea in 1922 as senior engineer in the cruiser, H.M.S. Southampton, and two years later served in the department of the Engineer-in-Chief at the Admiralty. He resumed sea service in 1927 as senior engineer in the then new battleship H.M.S. Rodney.
A brief period as lecturer at Greenwich was followed by the post of professional secretary to the Engineer-in-Chief.
He was appointed chief engineer in H.M.S. Sussex in 1937 and after two years' service was officer-in-charge of the Admiralty Fuel Experimental Station, transferring to the Engineer-in-Chief's department two years later.
In 1944 he became fleet engineer officer in the British Pacific Fleet. He was promoted to be engineer captain in 1946 and appointed Admiralty engineer overseer for the London district, with responsibility to the Engineer-in-Chief for inspection of all machinery manufactured in London. After his retirement from the Service in 1948 he joined the staff of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, Ltd.
Admiral Simpson, whose death occurred on 5th January 1952, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1947.
