"HERVEY CYRIL WOOD, whose untimely death occurred on 19th January 1951 at the age of forty-seven as the result of injuries sustained while carrying out his duties at Umtali, Southern Rhodesia, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1949. He was also a Member of the [[Institute of Engineers (South Africa)]]. He was educated at Tonbridge School, Ashford Technical School, and the Technical College in Johannesburg. He served his time in the Ashford works of the [[Southern Railway]] from 1921 to 1923, and two years later went to South Africa, where he joined the staff of the Crown Mines at Johannesburg. After filling in succession the positions of draughtsman, fitter, foreman and sectional engineer he was appointed resident sectional engineer in 1937. From 1940 to 1946 Mr. Wood held the appointment of chief resident engineer to the [[Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Co|Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, Ltd]]., with responsibility for the installation, bringing into service, and maintenance of all equipment.
