"JAMES PATERSON was connected with the paper making industry during almost the whole of his professional career. He was educated at Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh, and served an apprenticeship between 1891 and 1898 with Dale and Oliver, Ltd., engineers, Kirkcaldy, and James Milne and Son, Ltd., Abbey Mill, Edinburgh. After four years' experience as junior foreman to Bertrams, Ltd., engineers, Edinburgh, he went to Kendal to take up an appointment as chief engineer of J. Cropper and Company, Ltd., paper makers. He remained with the firm until 1920 when he joined J. Dickinson and Company, Ltd., Croxley paper-mills, Watford. As chief engineer he was responsible for the full control of a seven-machine mill as well as a large engineering staff. In addition he supervised the installation of a complete esparto plant. Mr. Paterson, who had been living in retirement since 1930, died on 10th December 1951 at the age of seventy-five. He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1928."
